Postdoc or PhD student position in bacterial & computational evolution

I am looking for a postdoc or a PhD student to work on projects related to bacterial evolution using computational methods (models and simulations, data analysis, artificial intelligence).

Location: Grenoble, France

Starting date: December 2023

Supervision: Antoine Frenoy (Asst. Prof.)

Salary: following the university salary grids, before taxes, ~2000 euros for a PhD student and >=2450 euros for a postdoc depending on previous experience

Duration: 3 years for PhD student, 1-3 years for postdoc

Science

The specific project can depend on the skills and interests of the applicant. The general scientific interests of my group are centered around bacterial evolutionary and ecological dynamics, mutagenesis, genome organization and second-order selection. Potential projects include:

We work in dry lab, but closely collaborate with several experimental teams. Our resources and methodology thus include:

Environment

The applicant will be part of the MAGE (Models and Algorithms for Genomics) team. MAGE has a longstanding scientific history in the field of computational biology, and was one of the early players in the use of artificial intelligence methods for biomedical research (eg for evolutionary biology, genomics and multi-omics).

We are part of a larger institute, TIMC, which gathers clinicians, biologists, mathematicians and computer scientists around interdisciplinary studies in biology and healthcare, at all levels between fundamental research and clinical applications. This environment offers possibilities for rich scientific interactions and collaborations, seminars, etc.

Grenoble is known for its rich student life and its proximity to the mountains. It is also an area renowned for many opportunities for employment in science and technology.

Knowledge of French is not a requirement. International students may be interested in the practical guide for international PhD students from the International Students and Scholars Office in Grenoble.

Application

The applicant should have:

Applications or informal inquiries should be sent by email to Antoine Frenoy. Applications should include:

There is no strict deadline. Review of applications will start end of August 2023 and stop when a strong candidate is found.
